I would slave at the piano for five hours daily. Linda practiced far less. Yet somehow she always seemed to have an edge that made her the star performer of our school. What does she have that I don't?
Linda's best friend, Sheryl, sensed my internal competition. One day she bragged on and on about Linda, adding more fuel to my fire. Sheryl gloated over a few of Linda's uncanny abilities: Her fantastic EAR is the key to her success.
How could I ever hope to compete with her? But later I doubted Sheryl's story. How could anyone possibly know F or Bb just by listening? An ear like that would give you a mastery of the entire musical language! I finally got up the nerve, approached Linda, and asked her point-blank if it was true.
I rudely pressed, "Can I test you sometime? My plan was ingeniously simple: I picked a moment when Linda least suspected. I made sure she had not been playing any music. I made her stand so she could not see the piano keyboard.
I made certain that other classmates could not help her. The tension mounted as I plotted my testing strategy. Then, with silent apprehension, I selected a tone to play. She'll never guess F! I had barely touched the key.
I played another tone. She didn't even stop to think. Instantly she announced the correct pitch. I frantically played more tones, skipping here and there all over the keyboard. But somehow she knew the pitch each time.
She sang a tone. Now I started to boil. I called out more tones, trying hard to make them increasingly difficult. Still she sang each note perfectly on pitch. I was totally boggled. And to my dismay, that was all I could get out of her!
My head was dizzy with disbelief. On the other hand, why can't everyone recognize tones by ear? I thought about that. A musician who can't tell tones by ear?! That's as strange as an artist not knowing the rainbow colors of paints on his palette!
It seemed odd and contradictory. I found myself even more mystified than before. Humiliated and puzzled, I went home to work on this problem. At age 14, this was a hard nut to crack. You can be sure I tried it myself.
But I found it was a guessing game I couldn't win. I tried to feel the "highness" or "lowness" of each pitch. I played tones over and over to get them to stick in my head. Day after day I tried to memorize those elusive tones, but nothing worked.
After weeks of pure nothing, I still couldn't get it. I wished I had an ear like that. But I realized it was way beyond my reach. So finally, I gave up. It was like a miracle. A twist of fate. I began to notice faint "colors" within the tones.
Not visual colors, but colors of pitch, colors of sound. They had always been there. The realization struck me: Would you like to tell us about a lower price? If you are a seller for this product, would you like to suggest updates through seller support?

I read Mark Rush thesis that tested David Burge's technique and it showed some improvement, I am trying to get a hold of the Univ Calgary Study that he quotes - but very little detail on what his training program does.
I want to see more evidence before I invest in his "relatively" expensive training program. Was this review helpful to you? I, too, began the course with only a very skeptical hope, but by the end of the first weekend, I started to recognize the "flavor" of many notes, regardless of octave or even instrument.
Even after my first listening, I started to recognize the pitch of blenders, lawnmowers, elevator movements, announcers' voices, and so on, knowing which note they were. As a non-musician, though, I had to learn the names of the notes that represent the flavors or colors of the pitches that I could recognize.
Naturally, I don't know how to play them on an instrument, either. As for whether I was born with perfect pitch, I could answer either way but also emphasize that the same would be true for any other person.
I must admit, though, that I've always had a good ear for languages, being able to mimic accents of the various languages that I've learned, much to the amazment of my university professors and native speakers.
Now, if only I could apply my pitch recognition. I still can't control my voice to match the sound inside my head so that I could at least sing hymns with the rest of the congregation at church. Oh, I should also mention that although I recognize pitches of notes, even of the mechanical or electronic things around me, I still can't recognize chords or which notes compose those chords, and the course jumps right into the emphasis on chords almost immediately.
I'll see over time whether I can get a feel for chords of various instruments as I continue with the course, and then this should become more helpful or applicable to learning how to play an instrument and thus become able to play by ear after developing the techniques of whatever instrument I choose to learn.
Much like the Relative Pitch course, you need three main things for this course to work. First, you need time. A whole 15 minutes a day, and the occasional minutes to listen to the lessons. Second, you need patience, because it won't happen overnight.
Finally, you need dedication, because this course simply won't work if you only do it 3 or 4 times a week or less. Oh, and an instrument helps, too. No, you don't really need a friend. The team drills do help, but they aren't deal breakers by any means.
And no, you don't have to play a piano; this course can be done on any instrument. Finally, you don't have to have an instrument that can play more than one note simultaneously to finish the course Also, please don't put so much fear into his use of the word "color.
The surface color is what makes a guitar sound different then a piano or flute. Then, there's the color underneath the surface, which is the same on any instrument for the most part, and is where you get "perfect" pitch from.
But it's such a tiny thing that really, the more you try to understand it in the early stages, the worse you'll be. Just keep it in the back of your mind. So you have a few options, here. If you know that you can't dedicate the time and effort to this course, then don't buy it.
Then you won't have to call Mr. Burge a "snake charmer" just because you're lazy. However, if you have the time, patience, and dedication, this will change your outlook on music in ways you couldn't imagine.
I highly recommend this course. See all 3 reviews. Most helpful customer reviews on Amazon. September 5, - Published on Amazon.

They were unable to provide a reference even though the course has been around since the late 80s! Also, notice how the numerous testimonies on their site "brag" about occationally spotting a note here and there, but none contains a claim that the person developed perfect pitch.

Was this review helpful to you? Audio CD Verified Purchase. I reviewed this for a friend who was hoping to gain absolute pitch. I had to throw in my two cents worth, because I found some of these reviews way off base; they left me wondering if they actually followed the instructions carefully.
He failed the first effort and asked me since I have this skill since childhood to evaluate the method. I believe that his method is entirely sound. He describes perfectly what it is like to distinguish the different pitches by ear, and at the same time blows up a lot of the mythological BS that has become almost ubiquitous among those who do not understand how it works.
He began to see substantial results after about eight months. Personally, I do not agree with the author that "anyone" can acquire this skill, as by my estimation, there are people in this world who are not temperamentally suited the stilling themselves in an patient, meditative, non-stressful way.
I'm not criticizing such people, but some are just wired differently. Yes, it absolutely does work. But you have to spend time, every day, listening. For me, it took over a decade because I'd be really into it for a while, then I'd forget it for a couple of years, pick it back up again for a few months, and so on.
But it does work. Two things to remember: You have to be patient. You will not just be able to get it instantly. It does take time. But the exercises are fun, so it's not like its drudgery.
And the payoff is great! I started this summer of and made significant progress until college started. I tried to stick to it my fall quarter but eventually stopped. I just recently picked it up again this summer in June and I have made even more progress.
I am currently working on master class 13 and I am positive that I can get perfect pitch. The only thing that could potentially get in my way is my motivation in sticking to it. If you approach this with a skeptical attitude thinking that it may not work and get impatient after a few days of no progress, you're going to end up leaving a bad review like all the negative reviews on this page.
But if you come at this with childlike attitude, ready to learn and take in everything this phenomenal teacher has to say, and stick to it with patience, you will get perfect pitch. I did not have great ears when I started this which is probably why I am taking longer, not to mention that I had stopped doing it for a period of time.
But I have full faith that I will attain perfect pitch. It's simply a matter of doing what he says daily, even if I don't see any progress and I know that I will get it. If you're on the fence about getting it, I'm not going to tell you to get it, because if you're expecting to get perfect pitch without any hard work, you're going to be like all the negative reviews here.
But if you truly desire this and you are open minded and willing to put in the effort, this is the best investment you will make. Take my word for whatever it's worth, coming from an anonymous consumer on amazon who may or may not be affiliated with this course obviously I'm not.
Will be posting an update as I continue in this course. If you spend the time to do this and keep an open mind. I can see how people dislike the course, but David Lucas Burge spends hours meticulously emphasizing specific points.
At times he is redundant, but I think he is doing so on purpose to be very clear as he cannot be there 1 on 1 with you. My ear grew tremendously since starting this course 4 months ago. You cannot, and I repeat cannot, notice daily progress and sometimes not even weekly progress.
But when you look back, if you're committed he does emphasize this is something that should be done daily you'll notice and whole new way of listening you've never been aware of. It is subtle, so subtle that I think most of the people who are giving it bad reviews just never really spent the time to really give it a chance.

Will be posting an update as I continue in this course. By Kenny on June 27, If you spend the time to do this and keep an open mind.

It is subtle, so subtle that I think most of the people who are giving it bad reviews just never really spent the time to really give it a chance.
By Mr Skid on July 14, It is interesting to hear the perspective of someone who has perfect pitch, and Mr Burge clearly knows what he is talking about. I think that it is possible to teach people how to acquire perfect pitch, in the right environment, and with the right amount of time months and years.
Unfortunately I don't think that Mr B has the right approach to communicate these ideas to the commercial market, and an audio course of this abstract complexity is going to have a high drop put rate. In terms of presentation, this is probably the most irritating audio course I can think of listening to.
For instance, whilst it is common for speakers to repeat material to make a point, it is so obvious that Mr B is doing this purely to waste time that one is likely to get annoyed with him very early on in the course.
Not a good start. And the actual thing he is trying to teach you is so abstract that it is probably best compared to listening to an audiobook on how to see 3d stereogram images. Such a course as this should never have existed in the first place, IMHO.
Overall this sums up everything about bad teaching - an educator who provides a product with a high perceived value in this case, length that in fact does very little for most of the people who purchase it, and, perhaps inadvertantly or not, everything for the ego of the man himself.
By Florizel on October 26, I bought this ridiculous course years ago and practiced with it according to the instructions. I found it absolutely useless. It did nothing at all for me. I can literally and without exaggeration say that this course did not improve my ear at all, in any way.
I think the author is a scam artist who deserves investigation by the authorities, and I earnestly hope that at some point he is invited to talk to a duly authorized fraud expert who brings down his empire of fakery.
By the way, I am not by any means a pro musician, but I am an amateur and can sing in tune. I've studied basic music theory and singing at the college level, and I have improved from those things.
I've had fine teachers and benefited from their instruction. This is quite possibly the only music theory course or musical training product I have bought that I can sincerely say has no value whatsoever.
By Amazon Customer on April 24, I have practiced both the Perfect Pitch 'supercourse' and the Relative Pitch course from the same author. I know, I know. And this is just the beginning of my rant!
