The non platinum version can't handle BluRay, won't let you resize some windows, lacks some video effects and transitions which are standard in the Platinum version, and lacks the so called SmartSound feature.

I used Movie Studio 13 for about a month before I sprang for the cost of the Platinum version. There's nothing wrong with this version design from VEGAS, it's just that you should be aware before sinking money into the non Platinum version.

I've found Movie Studio 14 Platinum to be what I need or want - and more. There are many more features than I can use at this time. This is a change from my previous experience with video editors in this price range which all fell short on basic features.

Studio 14 Platinum is far beyond a basic editor. At this point I don't see myself needing anything more than Studio 14 Platinum. One very cool feature of Studio 14 Platinum that isn't available in the non Platinum version is the ability to create Picture-in-picture videos.

With that feature I can show, for example, a video of a wake board rider behind our boat as viewed from the boat, and from the GoPro camera the wake board rider is wearing. I have had a bit of a learning curve because every video editor I've ever owned has had a unique and quite different user interface from others.

This is true of Studio 14 as well and I'm slowly discovering the features as I go along. There is reasonable help in the program, more on-line, and a decent user forum to have my questions answered. I especially appreciated the ability to apply video effects and corrections to portions of my videos.

That allows me to brighten, color match, and apply many other filters and restrict those filters to selected portions of the timeline. This may be a common capability of other video editors, I don't know.

But I do know I was not able to do that with the four or five other video editor programs I've owned Pinnacle, Microsoft, Power Director, Adobe Premier Elements but they were all programs I abandoned a few years ago so don't have the latest versions.

Another feature I appreciate is the ability to work with 4K files. I now have three cameras that can record in 4K. Image stabilization has helped me create reasonable videos out of clips that were taken on our boat where it is very difficult, at times, to hold a camera steady.

Let's face it, there's more switches in here than the Wizard had behind that curtain. However, when the software went on sale as a Black Friday Special, I took the plunge. And, I am glad that I did. Within an hour, I was flipping those switches and had edited a sweet video from some of my High Def files.

I feel like a pro using the software now after going through their tutorial DVD's and I highly recommend picking up the two DVD set if you want to get further into the details of the software, however the DVD included is enough to get you going quickly.

Oh, and if you've been considering Pinnacle's products, just don't even go there! Unless of course you're filming a video about an unstable software that forces a blue screen of death EVERY TIME you press the button to burn your project to disk subsequently losing all of your work, thereby transforming you into Linda Blair spewing obscenities and vomiting on your keyboard for which there is no exorcism not even Pinnacle Tech Support.

I can make a full menu complete with background music and sub-menus. There are many, many transitions to choose from. As well as buffer and background music that can be easily looped. And many sound effects. I can edit each track of audio to get the perfect surround sound effect.

Most of my videos don't have a menu are simply edited for time. This works flawlessly with Windows 7. I recently burned an 1 hour and 20 minute blue-ray video. It took about 12 hours. But it burnt a perfect blu-ray video. So I wrote a review for the last incarnation of this software package version 9 and a lot of people found it very helpful.

There was one BIG problem with Version 9 - it had bugs in the video rendering section, which were never fixed with the software updates. You can now safely encode video to all major formats used worldwide, creating your own custom templates if you wish.

Highlight Features for the above three programs: That's what I love the most about this software package - it's full of professional grade tools and effects. If you can think it, then Sony Vegas can do it.

Many other retail video editors come no where near Sony Vegas, they are like toys in comparison, seriously. I taught myself over the last year and a half using the Help Index, How To Animations and just pure patient experimentation.

This part of the program has been upgraded now and is much easier to use. If this is you, then stick with Windows Movie Maker. If you like to experiment, have patience in learning new things, and really enjoy using Professional Tools to create a Professional Look, then go with this software package.

I have yet to come across a limitation with this software - "creatively speaking". I highly recommend existing users of older versions of this software, to make the upgrade due to the additions and fixes.

The price of this package or the upgrade for existing users is unbelievable, compared to the Pro Version. There is something that people should be aware of. High Definition Video Cameras are advancing technologically faster than the everyday home computer can deal with.

So if you expect Vegas to edit large High Definition files properly, then you are going to need a fast computer with plenty of memory. If you are on an old computer, Vegas is not going to work.

Rendering video, especially High Definition video, can suck every last brain cell out of your computer and ask it to travel beyond light speed, while pondering the creation of the Universe. So buy a new computer and retire your dinosaur, before attempting to become a Video Enthusiast - this will prevent experiencing a "Meltdown".
