The fast-track certification method is where you set ambitious goals to learn the material and pass the exams and dedicate as much time as you can make available to accomplish those goals. I recommend setting up a lab environment so that you can get some hands-on experience with each topic. I am going to outline the process I take and include links to the resources in the next section that will be exam specific. I would typically take a Saturday and invest a few hours too. One of the shortcomings of this text is the dearth of end-of-chapter questions and practical exercises. The System Center suite has been moving closer and closer together in integration with one another, and I believe that this will continue to be the trend for obvious benefits of a tightly integrated solution.

If you have a solid understanding of Windows Server R2 then this will be easy read as much of what is discussed is similar to Windows Server R2. You should also have a working knowledge of Windows Server as this book is not a technical reference.

The author did a good job of providing numerous references throughout the book which help to fill in the details of what is presented in the book. The end-of-chapter review questions were okay. I would like to have seen more questions and had them laid out more in line with how the test is formatted.

I would purchase this book again. There are some newer books on Windows and R2, but this book was a fantastic method of oganizing review of core concepts even for somebody who works on R2 regularly. Each section I got something I did not know.

In using this book, I download free Windows R2 trial at home and just ran throught concepts in each chapter on that practice server. This book might be useful for someone who has just passed their Windows exam, but if it's been a while since you have used every feature of Windows R2 Many sections begin with something like "If you received your certification before the release of R2 you need to review this" this book will probably be inadequate.

In addition there are only 3 sample questions for each study objective. Even if you have recently passed your Windows certification you will probably be better off with another study guide that provides more in-depth coverage.

This book is written well for someone who has a great deal of OS experience and wants to learn the new stuff and how differs. By no means is it a beginner book. It assumes you already have real world experience with the previous OS and will not hold your hand through learning the basics.

All in all a good book. It is accurate on every level: It draws the reader's attention to specific gotchas to look out for in the exam - it is a true exam reference. It is technically accurate also. Overall it is easy to read.

Concepts are explained in a way that it is easy to understand. Passed the exam with no trouble at first attempt. Private Cloud certification the exam was one I was dreading. This book did an excellent job of preparing me for the exam and I'm happy to say I just passed the exam this afternoon using only my home lab for practice and this book as study material!

I think that people should be prevented from rating an exam preparation text on Amazon unless they actually used it to prepare for an exam. This would reduce the proliferation of 5-star ratings for texts that people have never read, but "received in good condition" or "received on time" and so on, thus making the reviews infinitely more useful to everyone.

Sadly, however, there is no practical way I know of to enforce this. In conclusion, of the texts currently available for the exam, this would be my preference, considering, however, that it should not be your only exam resource.

This book is a great study aid. I used it in conjunction with a video course and some online research. Also, I see a lot of comments about the book not shadowing the exam. The testing agencies like to keep their questions somewhat secret it cuts down on cheating and actually tests one's knowledge I choose this book after seeing the mix of reviews on the Microsoft certification guide.

The reviews were much better for this guide. Each of the eighteen chapters in this book has a pretest to determine if you need to read the chapter. Unless you have a lot of experience in various areas, I would recommend reading through the chapter anyway even if you score well on the pretest.

Answers to the pretests are found in the back of the book. At various points throughout the book are "Key Topic" icons to alert you to topics especially important to remember for the exam. At the end of each chapter the author presents a table listing all the key topics for that chapter and their page numbers - nice for quickly reviewing the important concepts.

There is also a list of key terms found at the end of each chapter that the author deemed important to remember. Each chapter is preceded by a page describing what will be covered in the chapter. At the end of the book you will find a question practice exam followed by the answers and a detailed description of not just the correct answer but also the why the other answers are wrong.

I found this nice because I learned a lot when reviewing the reasons for various answers being incorrect. There is also a glossary of terms that are used throughout the book and then there's the index.

People complained about lots of errors in the Microsoft guide. This guide also had some errors, but none that I felt were too significant. I have read certification guides for XP and Vista before, and I have yet to come across a certification book sans errors.

The CD has something called Memory Tables and an answer key. You can print this out for study. It is a listing of tables taken from the book. You can use these tables of important concepts to study for the exam. The CD also has the glossary which you can print out.

You can access the companion web page for the book from this CD as well. Here you can register the product to activate a free online edition for 45 days. The exam on the CD is your typical test engine. It has a study mode and a test mode.

The test mode presents you with a random selection of questions, and it is timed. The study mode allows choosing questions from whichever chapters you want to study. It also has the typical study options such as randomize questions, grade at end of test or grade after each question, exclude questions answered correctly, select only questions missed, etc.

The questions used in the exam are the same questions present at the end of the book. Addendum to practice exam on the CD: Question 32 in the book lists C as the correct answer. In the CD exam, it lists B as the correct answer, but gives the correct explanation.

Question 92 in the book lists three answers as correct: In the exam, it lists only A and G as correct but gives the correct explanation. I think the author did an admirable job of covering the material for the exam. He also lists web references throughout the book that you might want to consult in you study.

Pay close attention to Dynamic Access Control!! Also, the test goes back to a lot of Windows R2 stuff, so pay attention to the areas of this book where he talks about stuff like that Great book, worth the money and WILL prepare you for a successful result on the test.

I used this book as a starting point for my exam preparation due to the fact that Windows Server R2 is being used for the exams and this book was written for Server If you have a solid understanding of Windows Server R2 then this will be easy read as much of what is discussed is similar to Windows Server R2.

Published on November 12, Published on February 18, Published on January 3, Published on November 10, Published on August 3, Published on May 10, Published on November 27, The primary motivation for me is it adds measurable valuable to me as an IT professional.

It adds this value not simply because I have the certification, but because I have demonstrated that I care about the technology enough to spend my time diving into the nuts and bolts of it. I have demonstrated that although technology moves quickly I intend to keep up.

Now, to those that do the bare minimum to pass the exams there really is no intrinsic value for the certification they obtain. Because, the certification is not a statement that you can pass a series of tests, but a statement that you know the content and have the skills necessary to perform on-the-job.

Faking it until you make it may or may not work, but I strongly encourage you to invest the time to really learn the material and have confidence that you are the expert you work to become. That all aside, the diligent fast-track of certification versus the slow-paced certification method.

I prefer the fast-track when it comes to certifications and it has worked well for me. The fast-track certification method is where you set ambitious goals to learn the material and pass the exams and dedicate as much time as you can make available to accomplish those goals.

For me it meant communicating with my family the value of what I was doing and giving them an expectation of how long it will take me. You want to have their support as you consume precious time to do this. People are naturals at procrastinating and spare time is rarely just discovered, but more often it is allocated and planned for.

I allocated an hour before work, most of my lunch hours, an hour each night, and two to four hours on the weekend. However, I am intentional about studying. Another reason I am advocating the fast-track to certification is that Microsoft and other vendors are going to an annual product release cycle, and if you take too long learning one product version by the time you are done you are already behind.

I highly encourage everyone on the certification journey to get social and contribute your experience. I would start by getting connected to experts in your field of study. Connect with people on the forums and on Twitter.

There are a lot of people on Twitter with informative posts, so follow the ones above and search for relevant posts on Twitter and follow people who are talking about what matters to you as you study. If you want to share more you can even start your own blog.

I have been encouraged by all of the feedback and support I have received along the way from the online community. I developed a method that worked well for me and I know this will not work the same for everyone, so I hope you will glean from this whatever you believe will work in best for you and the process you define.

I am going to outline the process I take and include links to the resources in the next section that will be exam specific. I start by gathering the exam objectives and resources available into OneNote, where I have a page created for each exam.

I continue to work off of this throughout my studying. Again, details on resources is in the next section. Once I have my OneNote populated with the exam objectives and the available resources. I make tentative notations on sections that I need hands-on experience with, topics that are completely new to me, and ones I feel like I already have a grasp on.

You can highlight them, take notes, whatever makes sense to you here. I do this so I have my priorities. I then turn to the books available, if there is any, and will read through the book my first time not using the printed books and using the Kindle versions.

This works with theses exams because it is not simply memorizing the information and tables as much as it is understanding the concepts and principles, and being able to actually do what you learn.

So, the value I find in reading the books is getting the overview. I then go to the video training on CBT Nuggets and start the series. Sometimes there is a walkthrough on setting up your lab environment for the series, and other times I just look ahead to see what I will need and can reproduce in my lab.

For the most part watching the video series and following along in my lab is where most of my most profitable study happens. If there is I either watch the video for that area again, find other online videos, TechNet articles, blog articles from industry experts, or try to simulate it in my lab.

The final study method is the practice tests. This is to primarily get the feel of taking what you have learned and working through questions. I will reference some practice tests below, but I typically used the practice questions in the books.

If you have never taken a Microsoft exam before, they have some exam format and question type video clips that help you see what the test is like. When going through the practice tests be sure to use your troubleshooting skills to eliminate answers and narrow down the possibilities.

Try to simplify the question down as much as you can and be sure to know what details need to be considered. If one is hurting your head and holding you up just mark it for review and come back to it. You should be able to see how many questions are on the test and how much time you are given to take them.

With this information you can determine how much time you can spend on each question. Be sure that you are practicing timely question taking during your practice. On to the day before the test. For me, I go over all of my notes and try to draw it back to memory.

There was a problem filtering reviews right now. Please try again later. I will start by saying that this book is an excellent resource and covers the majority of the subject matter needed for exam success.

With that being said, by using this book alone it may prove difficult but possible to pass the exam. I would recommend this book as a primary source of study to be used along with other resources such as videos and practice tests.

Additionally it is extremely helpful that the reader perform any procedures described in the book in an actual Windows 7 installation or follow along as they read through the book. If you score well on the practice test in this book you should do well on the actual exam.

Overall, this book was money well spent and proved to be a key resource when preparing for the exam, highly recommended! Was this review helpful to you? The Kaplan Selftest and MeasureUp practice tests were also a vital part of my preparation.

The Microsoft exams are much harder now, and you will not pass the exam by using any single study resource, including this book. However, this Poulton text is a good starting point, but it must be combined with many other resources, including hands-on experience, if you really want to pass the test.

One of the shortcomings of this text is the dearth of end-of-chapter questions and practical exercises. The trivial little "Memory Tables" at the end of chapter do not compensate for this in any way. In this regard, I found the Microsoft Press text to be superior, since it provided both questions and practical exercises in each chapter.

That's why I started off with the Microsoft text exam objectives 1 and 2 , until I got frustrated by the plethora of errors. Then I switched to the Poulton, and used it for exam objectives 3 to 8, so this became my primary text.

Now I want to complain.

It has a study mode and a test mode. The test mode presents you with a random selection of questions, and it is timed. The study mode allows choosing questions from whichever chapters you want to study. With this disclaimer being said lets talk about the book.

The book is very simplistic. Its set up in some sort of bullet point method. Hitting each topic covered on the certification in the most superficial way. It almost spoon feeds you the concept. To the point where I feel the exam tip section is literally what will be asked on the test.

Kind of like an ethical test dump. Its supposed to be a upgrade test and yet the book is thinner than the any of the older books. I think the book is ish pages. I get it that I'm literally complaining about how this book makes passing the test easy.

Yeah I guess like learning. This book is not for learning but passing the cert. It's not a bad book its just disappointing. Was this review helpful to you? This book covers all the areas you will be tested on. Pay very close attention to all the 'Exam Tips' in this book.

Believe it or not, those exam tips account for the majority of the test questions I received. Of course, you have to refer to the TechNet articles in order to drill deeper into topics, but that isn't too bad.

Pay close attention to Dynamic Access Control!! Also, the test goes back to a lot of Windows R2 stuff, so pay attention to the areas of this book where he talks about stuff like that Great book, worth the money and WILL prepare you for a successful result on the test.
