Surely you have heard of Getty Images, but if not, here's a synopsis: Their site is easy to create an account with and you can get started uploading photos right away. As with all sites, your photos will undergo a quality check QC to make sure they are up to Crestock's quality levels.

Crestock does not require exclusive rights so you are free to shop them around to other stock photo agencies. They have a preference for shots with people in them and like a lot of stock shops, they have more than enough sunsets, flowers, cats and dogs.

Royalty-free sites offer a static price per image download, no matter on the use to some degree, as there are limits. These sites can work well if your collection is large or in a particular niche. Uploads are fairly easy and straightforward with options for FTP, Java or basic uploader.

They list the license you are agreeing to assign to purchasers right on their site, which is nice to see before signing up. They also have the ever popular extended license if you want to kick up revenues for select images. Earnings are monitored in real time and they have an affiliate program to increase earnings.

This royalty can increase if you decide to become a photographer exclusively with Fotolia.

After about 8 months of working with different agencies, I put together some thoughts on the major stock agencies and my experiences with each to help give others some guidance in the world of stock photography.

One general thought on selling stock before we begin: No matter what agency you sell through, do not expect to become rich by selling stock photography. Going into this with the right mindset is key to not getting discouraged.

Getty can make you some serious cash, but for a serious price. In the industry Getty is seen as having the highest quality and highest standards for their imagery, but nothing comes cheap; and while some might be drooling over the advantages I would urge people to seriously consider if the disadvantages are worth it.

The biggest advantage to selling your work on Getty is how much money you have the potential to make. Keep in mind that word potential though before you get excited. No other agency even comes close to earning you that much. Another advantage is, well, pride.

Getty has a reputation of quality. In addition to that, they offer Editorial classification of your images. This is important for people shooting things like travel or architecture. If getting a release is impractical and removing stuff from the photo would make it look terrible, you can simply classify it as Editorial Only and you can still sell it.

Now the market for an editorial only image is smaller, but selling is better than not selling right? Another nice feature is you have the ability to add notes to your submissions. If you have questions or concerns that you want them to consider when reviewing your work, you can write it in the notes section for the reviewer to read.

They are able to look past the technical and see the creative value in work. The biggest disadvantage with Getty is that the contract is exclusive. That means anything you sell on Getty cannot be sold anywhere else.

So all your eggs are in their basket with those images. Next, their submission platform for contributors is awful. But no, it sucks. The photos are also organized in batches, which actually makes a lot of sense for the upload portion so that you can combine similar images in a single submission.

Not fully a disadvantage, but definitely not an advantage is the content review times. These are completely unpredictable. They say up to 4 weeks to review and list for sale. The truth is, you never know. Some submissions will be reviewed and listed in a day or two, more commonly it takes about a week to get them reviewed, but I have seen them take even up to 6 weeks!

It can be quite frustrating waiting that long to see feedback on the images and get them up for sale. While the application process for the bigger microstock photography sites like iStock or Shutterstock can be more difficult, Snow suggests getting started with one of the hundreds of other microstock sites.

D eveloping a diverse and robust portfolio is essential, since selling microstock is a numbers game. Legg recommends setting a goal of how many photos you will upload on a weekly, monthly or annual basis. His goal is 50 to images a month, which is scaled back from the images a month he uploaded when he was getting started.

Both photographers recommend considering the many potential commercial uses for your images and taking advantage of any connections you have to different industries. Remember that in stock photography, generic is best.

And photos with people or properties will require a model or property release be signed before selling the photo. Help improve the chances of your images selling by using the correct keywords, suggests Snow.

It all depends on how hard you want to work. While Snow and Legg sell exclusively on the microstock website istockphoto. An extended license gives the purchaser additional rights beyond the normal royalty free license.

For instance, under the standard royalty free license, the amount of print items t-shirts, mousepads, calendars, etc With an extended license, certain additional rights may be granted for an additional fee. One nice thing about Fotolia is they list the commissions and credits earned per sales depending on size and license right on their site before registering. This lets a contributor decide if they want to be fully exclusive, partially exclusive or non-exclusive right off the bat.

All images must be in JPEG format, at least x pixels, in original resolution and you must be the license owner. As with most sites, you may not upload images with protected logos or trademarks in them, which is standard practice.

They list the images that are most in demand making it very useful to target your work if the subjects are up your alley. Conceptual images are popular with this and other sites as they can be sold to a variety of markets.
