I'm sure it happened during the war, and I'm just as sure that it shouldn't happen in the game. Turn on 1-Click ordering for this browser. The IL-2 series has always brought these sideshows to the center ring, and in many ways, the results are far more entertaining than typical WWII air battles, which usually involve high-profile, high-powered, and heavily armed front-line fighters. Published on March 31, There are even plenty of new planes you won't ever get to fly. I'm new to game playing
The team has also included the twitchy deathtrap that is the Me, Germany's first operation jet fighter. While it's a lot of fun to fly assuming you don't set the damn thing on fire, it belongs to a new era of jet combat and its inclusion here seems just a bit off, however historically accurate it might be.
There are even plenty of new planes you won't ever get to fly. You'll have the chance to share the skies with standards like the Hurricane and Warhawk which can add a lot of variety to the missions. But there are still a few more planes you can fly.
Forgotten Battles adds new multi-engine bombers to the mix. Flying around in the cutting-edge He is a real treat. Though not as modern or good, quite frankly, the Soviets get the use of the TB-3 or "Tubby" as I call it.
The new large planes also afford you the chance to man various stations. Imagine being at the lead of a bomber formation when you hear someone call out attacking fighters. From here you can jump to a gunner position and let the AI take control of the flying.
And most of the time it does a good job. The plane AI is consistently challenging with enemies taking full advantage of every opportunity you offer them. Their understanding of energy seems pretty solid and they know how and when to trade height for speed.
Even so, I've failed missions because another plane in my squadron collided with me while I was on autopilot. I'm sure it happened during the war, and I'm just as sure that it shouldn't happen in the game.
The enemy shoots well enough without Lt. Danski slamming in to my plane. Thankfully, you can set the campaign settings to allow you to continue on past failed missions assuming you're not dead or freezing your ass off in some god-forsaken gulag.
The flight modeling is first-rate with a noticeable range of performances across aircraft types. Even starting on the runway, you'll notice that planes twist and buck in response to the power of the engine. Don't see what you're looking for?

There was a problem filtering reviews right now. Please try again later. Forgotten Battles is IL-2 souped up and really ready for serious action. The new dynamic campaigns generate heart-stopping missions that have me sweating when - or if - I get back to the airfield alive.
The AI is smarter and way tougher than any I have ever experienced in a flight sim, and you have to be on your toes as never before when enemy aircraft are near. The graphics are fabulous - stunning on 'perfect' with the most realistic looking water I've ever seen.
All the new aircraft are a treat. The new scenarios are almost unknown in the west - Finland, Hungary - and provide massive thrills as well as a history lesson. I have never had so much fun with a combat flight simulator as I am having with this one.
There are few bugs - P's that explode when going fast, a few flight model quibbles, perhaps over-accurate ship flak, and some phasing effects with the sound on some settings - but these are minor, and perhaps more importantly, given the track record of Mr.
Maddox, will doubtless be fixed quickly. Was this review helpful to you? This flight sim is fun to play. I have had mine for a couple years and find it relaxing, until the Me's or Fw's show up to party, then it can get squirrelly up there.
It takes some practice, I just wish the game had the stage the demo has in it. I also recomend Sturmovik Forgotten Battles, there are some interesting aircraft in it. Just got this game yesterday. In my opinion this is the best flight sim out there.
Lock on due out in June may top IL2 forgotten battles, but since it deals with a different time period, I know I will be flying both of them for quite sometime. Finally get to fly my favorite plane with a cockpt the Me The Me does not like big throttle response in this game or the engines will catch on fire lol.
I'll bet this plane is pretty realistic regarding WW2 technology. Got to be really careful flying it, but the full cockpit version was worth the wait. It kills anything in the air with a good pilot behind the controls.
Love the new maps also and online play. No flight sim tops this game right now. What a program, if you want a real feel experience this is it. When the anti aircraft rounds from surface ships rip through your plane, you can almost feel it.
With 30 flyable aircraft, there is nothing that really compares too Forgotten Battles. I'm new to game playing So I have a little trouble figuring out what I'm supposed to do, but once running, it's great. The only problerm I have is trying to take off I always seen to do wrong thing and crash!
I never ordered this item. If you like staring at splash screens and listening to your hard drive spin, you'll love this game. Once you actually break through to the flying part, it's reasonably well constructed, although nothing like as revolutionary as the reviews would lead you to believe.
But the mechanical parts, the set up, the campaign selection, the options -- are pure rubbish. And the amount of time it takes to load is just flat amateurish. It's earned a proud place on my "little used" file, and it's likely to stay there.

Outside of this, little has changed in the graphics and sound departments, but since IL-2 Sturmovik: Forgotten Battles looked and sounded great to begin with, no upgrades were really necessary.
The expansion comes with dozens of new single-player missions that incorporate the new planes, as well as several new dynamic campaigns that feature combatants from the Polish to the Hungarians.
One of the most interesting campaigns has the player flying the aforementioned J8A the Swedish version of the British Gloster Gladiator while fighting for Finland against the Russians during the Continuation War.
The obscurity of this campaign represents all that is good about the IL-2 series. Here you are in a fixed-gear biplane of a s vintage designed by the British and supplied by the Swedes that is struggling to launch itself airborne to plink away at marauding Russian SB 2MA bombers that appear to be powered by washing machines.
The IL-2 series has always brought these sideshows to the center ring, and in many ways, the results are far more entertaining than typical WWII air battles, which usually involve high-profile, high-powered, and heavily armed front-line fighters.
Another focal point of this series is the low-altitude combat that was typical of the eastern front, as opposed to the relatively high-altitude aerial battles that were common on the western front. This expansion embellishes this theme.
Many of the complaints that have been leveled about flight models on the official and unofficial forums revolve around the fact that compared to expectations, legendary fighters like the PD and PL seem to underperform, while others, like the Japanese Ki "Frank," perform much too well.
To be fair, the Frank does seem to be a bit too potent, but these arguments rarely seem to take into account that most combat in the single-player missions and campaigns take place at altitudes of 15, feet or below--and many times at altitudes much lower than this.
Staying down in the weeds makes combat much more exciting, but it also contradicts most of the perceived notions about aircraft capabilities that many players have had pounded into their heads for years. For example, compare the performance of a PD Mustang to a nonsupercharged P Airacobra at 20, feet, and the P turns into a pathetic joke.
Make the same comparison at 2, feet, and the P becomes much more formidable. Jets and rockets feature prominently in the new expansion, including planes like this American YP, which is in the process of picking apart an Me The bottom line for players is that unless they find people to play with online who want to fight at high altitudes, they must throw out most of the generalities they "know" about the most famous WWII fighters to learn how all the planes perform at low to midrange altitudes.
The clipped-wing variants of the Spitfire Mk. Vb aircraft included in this package are perfect examples of modified planes that generally work better in the sim than their standard-model counterparts do. In these fighters, each end of the Spitfire's trademark elliptical wings is lopped off to give the plane's roll rate a boost and to improve its low-altitude speed, but the trade-off is vastly inferior performance at high altitude, compared to the standard Spitfire.
There are some exceptions, like the jets, rockets, and the TaH-1, which is incredible above 20, feet but inspires much less confidence down low. Overall, however, prepare to spend a lot of time dodging trees.
There are no specific mentions of AI improvements in any of the documentation that accompanies this expansion, but during testing, AI friends and foes pulled off some tricks we've never seen them do in the past. During one battle, we watched an AI P pilot lazily corkscrew upwards and to his right by using his superior engine power to slowly extend away from four pursuing Zeros, which was a tactic commonly used during the war.
On another occasion, we watched as an AI-controlled Me used a series of vertical switchback turns for a good five minutes to extend away from a pursuing Spitfire while simultaneously staying out of his opponent's sights.
The Me then turned violently to fire a snapshot that went straight into the top of the Spitfire's canopy for a quick kill. At the higher difficulty levels, AI planes often fight in the vertical instead of trying to dogfight in horizontal-turning battles, and they almost universally take advantage of the strengths of their aircraft.
No matter how good the AI is, it can't compare to the challenge of facing off against seasoned veterans online, and the Ace expansion offers many new online missions, including several new cooperative multiplayer ones and an online cooperative dynamic campaign.
This mode automatically generates new missions when old ones are completed--just as in the offline dynamic campaigns--but you get to fly the missions with your buddies to keep track of scores.
Newcomers should be aware that flying online is extremely unforgiving. The IL-2 community is a particularly hardcore group of gamers, and players who don't want to manually deal with things like propeller pitch and supercharger settings should stick to the game's excellent single-player component.
A P sidles up to a V1 to give it a tip. One false move equals instant death. Despite all the additions, there still is room for improvement. It still isn't possible to use all of the available maps in the Quick Mission Builder, although the new Pacific map was added as an option.
Forgotten Battles makes few changes to the format and formula of its predecessor, but the key differences distill into three categories. There's the addition of a dynamic campaign engine, a smattering of new aircraft to fly, and some new air forces to fly with.
The dynamic campaign is something flight sim fanatics practically expect now, and the one in Forgotten Battles is competent enough. Players fly missions for their side and can affect the movement of the military front with their performance.
There doesn't appear to be any force randomization in the missions, so even a dynamically generated mission sports the same adversaries in the same locations each time you replay it. But for those that like the ability to rewrite some history, the campaign does the job and adds some replay value.
There's much to do in Forgotten Battles, thanks to the addition of Finns and Hungarians to the Russian and German forces, with at least one campaign type for each. The game boasts more than 30 flyable aircraft, though many are variants of a basic airframe.
Some are also early war aircraft that aren't great combat performers, and perhaps only of interest to players with a curiosity for history. Still, the ability to man new bombers and their defensive gun stations gives the game a new facet.
Forgotten Battles also continues the IL-2 Sturmovik tradition of forging outstanding graphics. The sweeping vistas viewed from the cockpits are as beautiful as any seen yet in a flight sim. The cost for such visuals remains high too, however, and running Forgotten Battles isn't for those without some heavy iron in the video card and processor.
This high cost also applies to the game's general difficulty and can make it unfriendly to the casual simulation player. The flight models are very good, and demand a steady hand, but this isn't the problem for most. What's a little more challenging to get around are the superhuman skills of the opponent's artificial intelligence AI.
Thanks to the realistic ballistics models in Forgotten Battles, gunnery is one of the hardest skills to master. But the AI in both cockpits and anti-aircraft emplacements seems to manhandle it with aplomb, which can make for a frustrating afternoon of gaming.
Forgotten Battles tries to soften these rough edges with many optional pilot aids, but there are still gaps in the cushions. Players can lighten the demands of physics and select easier gunnery, but there are other quirks to frustrate them.
The Forgotten Battles interface is sometimes slow, especially moving between missions in the dynamic campaign. The documentation is weak on teaching strategy and tactics, often just telling players to practice.
Yak's danced with Messerschmitts above the frozen steppes while Stukas and IL-2s busted up tank columns. Overall the game was fantastic, even if the campaigns were a bit fixed and left you feeling detached from the action.
This time around the team has opted for slightly more dynamic campaigns. Simply pick a country to fly for, a plane type, and a theater and you'll soon be sitting in your cockpit on the runway. While the range of missions is nice, they can feel a bit canned or limiting when you consider that you'll have to stick with one plane type for the duration of that campaign.
There are opportunities to shake things up with the addition of the new Hungarian and Finnish campaigns but you'll still feel a bit constrained. The range of planes available in the first game was considerable.
Although I had some small issues with the developer's decision to model several varieties of single planes rather than providing fewer iterations of a wider variety of planes. And as if to prove that you can have it both ways, 1C has supplemented these brand new planes with plenty of new variations on old models.
There are many more s and s for you, my German friend. A new version of the Stuka also gives the German a big boost to ground attacks. The P Thunderbolt has always been one of my favorite planes so I'm really glad the team included it.
Long before I branched out to other planes, I firmly relied on the robust Jug for all my needs. It fits well here taking full advantage of its ground support orientation.

There, surprisingly, are no dynamic campaigns included for the new American fighters. Most planes don't stall properly and, instead, immediately begin to spin. Many cockpit gauges are modeled but are nonfunctional. The P's propellers can't counterrotate to eliminate torque, as they did in real life though this is probably due to an inherent limitation in IL-2's flight engine.
