Every web designer is really a UX designer. The process of creating a website is really about creating an interface that works and looks good. In Sketching User Experiences: Each chapter is full of practical exercises with visuals to help you along the way.
The W3C is the web body controlling how web elements are rendered and how designers need to create websites. I absolutely recommend this book for anyone looking to build their own websites. You should already have some interest in web development before picking up this book.
Jesse James Garrett breaks down the fundamentals in this book made for newbie designers just starting on their journey. Jesse tackles UX from all angles including general usability, interface concepts, brand identity, and information architecture.
There are no catch-all solutions to every UX problem. Both of these guys have long wrap sheets of skilled projects that prove their authoritative knowledgebase. This book covers a lot of technical stuff including doctypes and proper HTML coding standards.
Currently in its 2nd edition, this massive tome of design covers specific page elements and how you should think about them in your projects. Chapters range from typography to navigation to main content areas.
Dan is the founder of Dribbble and has built many other valuable projects for designers. His work is widely known and respected in the design community so if you decide to read through this book you can rest assured knowing the advice is sound.
Most ideals in web design spurred from traditional graphic design. Grids, typography, white space, contrast, all of these properties come from the graphic design world long before the web exited.
But learning to apply these properties on the web can be tough. This list should offer more than enough resources to get yous tarted in web design. There is no single perfect book since everyone comes from a different background.
The physical durability of these books is horrible. I've been reading these while sitting outside in the sunshine - apparently the glue cannot withstand this. This physical build quality is very disappointing and forces me to only award this book set 3 stars.
Otherwise it would definitely deserve at least 4 stars. This set is fantastic! Still have a long way to go though, of course. They are also beautifully laid out and present the information in a simple fashion, making the concepts bite-sized and easy to learn.
These two books are beautiful with their illustrations and such, but the pace at which they move is incredibly slow. On that note, I wish some of the stock photography illustrations in the book were replaced with additional examples as the examples that were in the books were helpful.
Nevertheless, the books are generally helpful, especially when laying out the format of functions and indicating what goes where. However, if you have programming experience elsewhere, consider another book.
I truly adore these books. These books not only have great information but the author writes them in as little as text as possible, no extra fluff. The examples are clear and simple and I can see myself referring to these in the future as I practice more.
Would definitely recommend and very happy with the quality and price. Binding issues were mentioned in previous reviews. I did not have this issue with my books so it may been fixed with the manufacturer? This review will be revised as necessary once I finish this set, but I have to say: I have previous experience programming in R and Python, and found the exposition to be very coherent and very clear.
About 10 hours through reading this book, I could actually read and understand most HTML code on a webpage. I have experience here and there having to write simple HTML pages on the fly, but it's nice to finally - understand - what the code is doing and have a good idea on how to structure a web page.
Highly recommended for people who need to learn HTML quickly and don't have time to Google absolutely everything! The CSS section is just as great, but it will take longer than 10 hours to go through. Very nice and easily reproducible examples except in the cases where he uses a downloaded image, but I don't mind that much.

The book is meant mostly for beginner though, so if you are already fluent then this might not be for you. Still it could be a nice reference for you. The book starts easy and takes each concept step by step in order to make it as easy as possible for you to learn the content, contains examples almost every page that you can try yourself and tinker with to your hearts content.
The author does a great job of getting information across while adding in repetition so that it sticks in your brain. Great product, and great stepping stone to a deeper understanding of web design and development.
Was this review helpful to you? Okay I have read a lot of development and code books and while there are a lot of good ones out there, I would say this has been one of my favorites. The author has done very well in explaining conceptually and with practical application and use of the development process and understanding syntax of HTML and CSS.
I still occasionally reference it when I need to touch base with the fundamentals again. I would recommend to have it in your library as a go to resource and learning tool. Excellent book for any skill-level, but essential to all beginners!
The content is laid out in a very fun fashionable way that will hold the reader's interest. The content is clear, concise and well-ordered. The paper quality and design is bar-none a graphical artist's dream. Upon first time cracking this book open, you will feel how stiff and sensitive the binding is.
I am very afraid to press down on the spine to get the book to lay down more flat to make reading words closer to inside the page simple. Judging by other reviewers, my fear is truly founded. But for now, all is intact.
Will update if there are any changes to this current event I really like this book. The information is fantastic and will have you rolling in no time, but the layout really is something else. This is one of the most pleasantly designed books I've ever encountered, and I do a ton of reading.
If you're looking at the page count and feeling intimidated, don't. There's a lot of open space on most of the pages, and the actual text you're working with is short and sweet. With that in mind, I spent a couple hours skimming through this and checking out the HTML lessons on w3schools, then downloaded Adobe Brackets and went to town.
I may be pretty lame, but I've been having a ball with this stuff. Very interesting material written well. I'd recommend this to anyone and everyone. Money definitely well spent. This is one of my favorite step by step computer guides.
If you know absolutely nothing about HTML, you can work through this book and within the first few chapters begin programming. Learning HTML is like learning a very simple foreign language, there are really not that many "words.

Learning HTML is like learning a very simple foreign language, there are really not that many "words. Individual commands are given a separate page each with specific examples and excellent graphics. Since CSS is such a vital part of the web programming these days I sort of wish these chapters would have been moved further forward in the book.
I've had so many books on computer software and programming that it is impossible to keep them all. This is one of the few that I not only kept but keep going back to. I use this book with in combination with "Styling with CSS book"; It is very helpful when you want to create or update your website.
Great book to read if you want to do programming creating your website. Very well explained, easy to access, very good product. The entire book has a custom design, like no other I've ever seen. There is incredible information in here and its easy to read.
This review is for the softcover. The book itself, should I call it the hardware, is a piece of trash. I hadn't reached pg. And as I read on, more and more chunks of it fell out. In an online response to complaints by other purchasers of this book, the publisher, Wiley apologized and assured us the next printing would be done by a differenl printer; whereas I'm happy for future buyers of this book, that doesn't help me.
I feel that Wiley should have offered some kind of compensation. But these books have been curated specifically covering the latest trends and the most interesting designs you can find. Absolutely anyone could read this book and come away with a deeper level of web knowledge.
